- Last Friday I took up two original paper-cuts and a large canvas on the train from Brighton to north east London to a Meanwhile Space venture organised in Stoke Newington. It has been organised as a collaborative working space and show-room/ shop for practicing artists and creatives in a dissused furniture warehouse. Cousins Dolly and Dora invited me in to work on a new screen print edition with them. Dolly runs a screen printing studio in Berlin, here are some shots of the job as it begins to progress. It’s a two colour silk screen print on A2 Somerset Tek 300gsm paper and is an Edition of 14 in Black and Yellow with hand finished red and an extra limited edition of 3 in Pink and Black with hand finished baby blue detailing.
- Here is the job so far, the final shots will follow shortly.
Both colours of the image to be are exposed on the same screen, here you can see the colour we’re printing in yellow on the right, and the black layer is taped up on the reverse of the screen to avoid any ink penetrating when it’s not wanted. These will then be swapped, the yellow taped up and black gets printed over the first layers.
It’s been a while, the stock we’re using is a Somerset paper with a generous grain, so you gotta pull hard to get an even, flat layer of colour.
Scoop off the excess ink and get it back on the screen, don’t want any blobs falling of the squeedgee onto the fresh prints.
We bull-dog clipped two prints back to back to dry on washing lines strung across the corner of the room which keeps dirt free and crispy.
We print 15 in yellow and the clean the screen. The next colour up is a shock pink which we print, but having piulled the first pink print twice to clear up a bald spot on the image, things got a bit messy, so printing a bunch on lining paper clears the screen and we’re ready to carry on with the final three.
The torn off paper prints used to clear the screen.
Four of these little buggers are bright pink, so if you wanna get your hands on the very exclusive ones then these are what you’re gonna wanna get.
The prints are drying and will be ready for the next layer first thing tommorrow morning.
Yellow, Black & Red, the prints dry out on lines in the studio.
This is a very small edition of prints so if you’d like to own one, please get in touch ASAP. firstname.lastname@example.org
Two colourways, yellow and Pink, I’m super happy with the result, nice and clean and poppy.
